Colonel Zedwitz

From Diary of the American Revolution, Vol II. Compiled by Frank Moore and published in 1859.

May 19.—Mr. Zedwitz, late a lieutenant-colonel belonging to the State of New York, in the service of the United States, was, a few days ago, taken up near Morris Town, in Jersey, dressed in women’s clothes. About the time the British army took possession of New York, he was tried by a court-martial and found guilty of attempting to give information to the enemy, for which he was sentenced to imprisonment during the war.1 He lately made his escape from Lancaster, Pennsylvania, and was thus disguised endeavoring to get to New York. He will probably meet the punishment his treachery justly merits.2
